Tribute to our father, George L. Doherty Jr.
Our father George L. Doherty Jr. was the President and owner of the George L. Doherty Funeral Service who personally served families over 60 years.
He succeeded his parents, taking over the family business in 1948. Along with his brother Joe they maintained the commitment to service and compassionate care for the needs of families in the greater Somerville community.
He married the love of his life 'Marita' (Clark) in 1954 and celebrated over 54 years of marriage. After their marriage they moved to Arlington where they raised a family and resided for 40 years before returning to Somerville.
Loving father and mentor of Nancy Doherty Neri, George L. Doherty III, J. David Doherty, Patrick M. Doherty and Resa Doherty.
He was a member of -The Greatest Generation- proudly serving his country in WWII as a decorated veteran of US Navy and USMC 4th Division during the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He was closely involved with the community. A member of Massachusetts and National Funeral Directors Associations, Somerville Chamber of Commerce, 100 Club of MA, K of C, VFW James A. Logan Post #6800, VFW George F. Dilboy Post # 529 and American Legion Post # 19.

Doherty Sr. As a third-generation, family-owned, full-service funeral home, we are dedicated to providing compassionate, dignified, and personalized service to Somerville and the surrounding communities. We also provide individualized counseling that extends beyond the boundaries of the funeral service. We understand and respect your grief.
