Obituary

O'Riordan, William "Bill" or "Liam" of Somerville passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday October 19, 2022. He was 95.
He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Mary B. (Deady) O'Riordan. Devoted father of Mary "Colette" White and her husband John of Somerville, William A. O'Riordan and his wife Barbara of South Carolina, James E. "Jim" O'Riordan and his wife Joann of New Hampshire. Kevin P. O'Riordan and his wife Moira of Ohio and Charles E. O'Riordan and his wife Janet of Woburn. Loving grandfather of Robert, Suzanne and Kieran White, Caitlin, Billy, Molly, Gina, Laurie, Cormac, Emmett, Megan, Mairead, Caleigh, and Mary-Kate O'Riordan and the great grandfather of Jordan and Liam. He was the cherished brother of Charles and Jeremiah "Jer" O'Riordan of Ireland, Patricia Maher of England, and the late Mary Donahue, Eleanor Ring, and Peggy O'Dwyer. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Blackpool, Cork, Ireland, he was the son of the late William and Mary (O'Regan) O'Riordan and oldest of seven children. While still a student at the Blackpool National School, Bill began hauling freight with a horse and carriage to help support his family. Eventually he worked as a teamster for Ireland's transport service, the CIE, driving horses and making deliveries throughout the city.
In 1956 he married Mary Bridget Deady at St. Finbarr's South Church (South Chapel) in Cork. And in 1957 he emigrated to Boston and began his career at the Finast (First National Stores) in what is now Assembly Square in Somerville. A proud member of the Teamsters union, he worked in a variety of departments where he was willing and able to learn any job, whether cutting meat, baking bread, or pumping gas. After the Finast left Boston in the late 1970's, Bill joined the paint shop at the Walter E. Fernald School in Waltham until his retirement in 1992. A gifted man, he would try his hand at any job especially one to help a friend in need.
Bill loved spending time with his extensive family - 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and extended family in the United States, Ireland, England, and Australia. Each summer, Bill & Mary would spend their summer at #9 in Blackpool and enjoy spending time with their siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends. Bill especially loved sharing a pint with his great friend and brother-in-law Dave Deady and the regular get together (often times in the famous Carrignavar) with his dear brothers Jerh & Charles.  He is deeply missed by family and friends.
