Mary B. O’Riordan (nee Deady) of Somerville passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on July 15. She was 94. Beloved wife of 66 years to the late William O’Riordan, they are survived by their five children. Devoted mother of Mary "Colette" White and her husband John of Somerville, William A. O'Riordan and his wife Barbara of South Carolina, James E. "Jim" O'Riordan and his wife Joann of New Hampshire, Kevin P. O'Riordan of Ohio and Charles E. O'Riordan and his wife Janet of Woburn. Loving grandmother of Robert, Suzanne and Kieran White, Caitlin, Billy, Molly, Gina, Laurie, Cormac, Emmett, Megan, Mairead, Caleigh, and Mary-Kate O'Riordan and the great grandmother of Jordan, Liam, and Kylie. She was the cherished sister of the late James and David Deady of Ireland. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews who knew her affectionately as “Mary Deady.”
Born and raised in Cork city (Ireland) Mary was the only daughter of the late Surrey James Deady and Mary “Molly” (Lynch) Deady. She attended St. Maries of the Isle School with the Sisters of Mercy where she developed a lifelong love of reading. After her father was killed in a WWII naval action in November of 1940, she and her brothers were raised by her mother and beloved maternal grandfather Patrick Lynch. Once 18, Mary spent a few years working as a maid in a Newport, RI mansion but eventually returned to Cork where she met her beloved husband at one of the many city dances. They were married at St. Finbarr’s South Church (South Chapel) in 1956 and emigrated to Boston in 1958.
Making Somerville their home Mary and Bill raised their five children. They frequently visited with the children’s cousins, the Donahue’s, and enjoyed spending time with their newfound neighborhood friends. Mary later worked in housekeeping at Tufts University where she served as Shop Steward and met her dear friends Victor (Cabral) and Connie (Cameron). An avid reader, she was most fond of spending time with her extensive family, never tiring of hearing stories about the lives of her grand and great-grandchildren. And in return she would share many of her own stories of her early life in Ireland. After retirement, Mary & Bill would spend many of their summers in Blackpool, Ireland enjoying daily trips into town and spending time with their siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends. She is deeply missed by family and friends.
