Mary A. (Doherty) Cooper-Cloyd, formerly of Arlington, passed away on September 23, 2026, she was 94. Born in Somerville, Mary was the oldest of four daughters born to Arlene (Sererance) And Gene Doherty, shortly after her birth they raised their family in Rye, NH. 

The beloved wife of the late Richard Cooper, who died in 1974, together they raised their family in Arlington. Following Richard’s passing, she remarried on April 28, 1984, to Wade Cloyd, they spent many years together enjoying time in Connecticut and later Hilton Head, South Carolina.

In addition to devoting herself to her family, Mary was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years. As one of the first licensed Nurse Practitioners in the state of Massachusetts, she served her patients in hospitals, schools and as a volunteer for high-risk mothers and babies in South Carolina. She also volunteered with the League of Women Voters. In earlier years she enjoyed trips with her grandchildren, skiing and boating. Above all she cherished time spent with her family.

The devoted mother of Rick Cooper and his wife Marion of Billerica, Karen McDonough and her late husband Kevin of Hanover and Lynne Cooper and her husband Joshua Cooper of Saugus. She was the cherished “Gram” to many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Dear sister of Patricia Lonergan of Portsmouth, NH, Jeanne Grivois of Brewster, Maine and the late Barbara Scammon of Rye, NH. Loving “Aunty May” to many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mary will begin with Calling Hours in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 10AM to 12Noon followed by a Prayer Service at 12:00PM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society at American Cancer Society.
