Obituary

Mary (Leonard) Canty --90, of Somerville, formerly of Reengaroga, Baltimore, Co. Cork, Ireland, passed on August 1, 2025.

Beloved wife of the late Cornelius Canty. Devoted mother of Neil Canty and his wife Kathleen of Franklin, Ellen Conte and her husband Vigo of Somerville, the late Michael Canty and his surviving wife Nancy of Barnstable.

Cherished grandmother of Erin McGrath and husband Chris, Molly Maynard and husband Michael, Sarah Canty, Ryan Conte and wife Erin, Kaleigh Conte, Maggie Canty and fiancé Chris Mobilia, Shane and Aidan Canty. Great-grandmother of Molly, Douglas, Meara, and Malcolm. Dear sister of Kathleen McSweeney and her late husband Dermot of Ireland and the late Timmy Leonard and wife Noreen, Maggie Collins and husband Teddy, John Leonard and wife Etta, Paddy Leonard and surviving wife Mary, Michael Leonard, Betty O'Mahoney, Breda Kealing, Eileen Caplice and husband David, Peter Leonard and wife Madge and Mary Kate Leonard. She is loved by many nieces and nephews.

Mary's family was one of seven families living in Reengaroga as fishermen and dairy farmers. The homestead was the site of tough but loving times. The kitchen fireplace tripled as a heat source, an oven and horseshoe repair shop, often accompanied by horses standing in the kitchen. Mary emigrated from Ireland with her brother, Peter, in 1954. Mary lived in Somerville and was a cook at St Ann rectory and a long standing parishioner. She loved to walk around the city when younger.

Mary loved her children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren. Her home sponsored many a Saint Patrick's Day celebration or backyard event that eventually had her neighbors inviting the Somerville Police to attend. She welcomed every dog in the neighborhood into her home for treats. Mary loved to cook and enjoyed baking her special coffee cake for her doctors and nurses at the Lahey Clinic; they always waited for Mary with their coffee cups in hand. She adored a scalding cup of tea. Mary loved life and enjoyed making people laugh. Mom will be greatly missed.
