Louise
Mccullough
Nov 22, 1926 — Dec 2, 2023
Susie Louise McCullough, "Louise" was born on 18 White Street in Cambridge, MA (Porter Square), on November 22, 1926 to Hyman Reginald Nicholas and Susie Frances Myers. She was one of six siblings which included her sisters Harriet, Beatrice ("Betty"), and Katherine ("Dimples"), and her brothers Hyman and Rudolph. The family later moved to the Central Square area of Cambridge (Jay Street), and Louise often conveyed that she grew up with a strong sense of family pride, a value for friendships, and a great pride in being a Cambridge native. Anytime she was asked where she was from, she would say "I was born and raised in Cambridge."
Louise was predeceased by her husband Lindsay B. McCullough and her daughter Deborah L. McCullough. Louise is survived by her son Steven L. McCullough, her granddaughter Lauren Cleckley (daughter of Deborah L. McCullough), and many loving relatives.
Louise attended Cambridge High and Latin School and also took several classes in expository writing at the Harvard Extension School. She enjoyed writing short stories and would often draw pictures with stories for her granddaughter. She was a great communicator and listener and was always willing to talk to and to listen well to friends and family.
She married Lindsay B. McCullough and raised her two children (the late) Deborah Louise McCullough, and Steven Lindsay McCullough, initially in Cambridge. The family also lived in Somerville, MA and ultimately settled in W. Medford, MA where they lived for over 25 years. In W. Medford, she enjoyed the community, and built many close friendships. She was active in the community, serving as a deaconess at the W. Medford Baptist Church for over 20 years. Louise and her family also had the opportunity to live for over 2 years in Honolulu, Hawaii in the mid 60's, while Lindsay worked on a special assignment for his company, MIT's Lincoln Laboratory. Louise often reflected on her wonderful time living in Hawaii, and she shared her love of the island with many who knew her. She would often wear muumuu dresses on holidays (up until the early 90's!), and maintained a lifelong love for Hawaiian culture which she shared with her granddaughter.
Louise had a 40-year career which included roles at Tufts University (support to African American student programs); the Greater Boston Legal Services (administrative assistant); the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth of MA (executive assistant to the Commissioner), and the Somerville Cambridge Elder Services (receptionist and elder information liaison). She enjoyed her career, worked hard, and was well respected by her colleagues. She had a great ability to connect with many people of all walks of life and backgrounds, and had a very warm, authentic personality in which she conveyed integrity and respect for all. For these characteristics, she was well liked by many throughout her lifetime.
Many who knew Louise know that she loved chocolate, shopping, and would never pass up a trip to Foxwoods casino to play the 25 cent slot machines in the hopes of becoming a multi-millionaire….. She tried yet did not quite achieve this dream. She never turned down a Snicker bar, a slice of chocolate cake or any piece of "high quality candy." Louise was a great cook and always would offer anyone who came over some delicious food that she'd made. She loved listening to jazz music, enjoyed going to shows at local jazz clubs with her family, and also loved her many trips to the theater to see plays or to attend dance performances, especially her favorite dance company, Alvin Ailey. Louise was a great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, friend and woman. She lived her life simply, yet with grace and integrity. For this she will be both remembered and missed.
