John D.
Carroll
Nov 29, 1946 — Feb 15, 2026
John D. Carroll — Of Somerville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, February 15, 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born in Boston, living most of his early life in Cambridge and the last 30 years in Somerville, he was the beloved son of the late Elizabeth (Barry) Carroll.
He was a dedicated and hardworking man who took great pride in providing the very best for his family. John honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he dedicated 35 years to the United States Postal Service working his way up to management. When retirement did not suit him, he returned to work in the mailroom at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike throughout his career.
Above all else, John cherished his family. His daughter and granddaughters were the center of his world, and each of them brought him immense joy. Sharing meals, dance parties, and after school visits were the moments he treasured most. He enjoyed cooking and always took comfort in making sure others were well fed. He was always willing to help a friend or family member in need when he was able to do so. John was an avid sports fan — especially of the Boston Red Sox — and a devoted follower of the news, faithfully reading the paper and watching television broadcasts each day. He was humble, quiet, and kind, known for his understated dry sense of humor, often delivered with a knowing smile.
Beloved husband of 44 years to Donna M. (Smith) Carroll. Devoted father of Meghan Kearney and her husband Ryan of Somerville. Cherished grandfather of Bronwyn (10), Greta (8), and June (4). Dear brother of the late David J. Carroll. Loving uncle to Jennifer Souza and Jagger Pakular, and brother-in-law to Debra Dutra and Shawn Smith.
Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) on Sunday, February 22 from 10:00AM 1:00PM. A prayer service will be held in the funeral home at 12:30PM.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Interment will be held at Cambridge Cemetery at a later date.
