Jean C. (Foley) Keelan, 88, passed away after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her loving husband James D. Keelan Sr. Daughters: Margaret (Peggy) Keelan Curtis and husband Larry from Brockton, Judith Keelan Saunders of Greenville, New Hampshire, Susan Keelan Andres of Ayer, MA, Rosemary Keelan Murphy and husband Michael of Reading, MA and deceased son SSG. James D. Keelan, Jr. and Daughter-in-law Anita Martins Keelan of Malden, MA. Grandchildren: Lynne Marr, James, Jacob and Jean-Marie Saunders, Daniel, Stephen and Kevin Curtis, Sean and Timothy Murphy, Connor and Ryan Keelan. Great-grandchildren: Calianna and Raegan Curtis, James Patrick Saunders and Vivian Sequoia Perez Saunders.
Jean, a life-long Somerville resident, never met a stranger and had a love of meeting new people and exploring new places. She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Jean was an entrepreneur, and with the help of her devoted husband Jim, established her own cottage-industry selling her hand-crafted quilts, table runners, aprons, baby sweaters, and baby booties at Craft Fairs in the surrounding areas.
Jean was very patriotic and hosted many Memorial Day and 4th of July barbeques for family and friends in Plymouth.
Her love of genealogy led her to explore her roots and relatives in Newfoundland and was an inspiration for the rest of the family.
Jean was a tax preparer for H&R Block for 25 years. In 2005, she received an award from the Internal Revenue Service in recognition of Outstanding Public Service for Volunteer Income tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. She was also a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. During the 1970's Jean served as the Secretary for St. Ann's School and St. Ann's Rectory. From 1976-1984 Jean was elected to the Ward 4 Somerville Democrat Committee. In 1976, Jean was an original sponsor of the Bottle Bill and received a Citation from Mayor Ralph in recognition of her service to the Somerville Recycling Program.
All are invited to a visitation at Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway, Somerville on Thursday, November 3 from 5pm-7pm and Funeral Mass on Friday, November 4, 11am at St. Ann's Church, Thurston Street Somerville. Interment will follow immediately at Calvary Cemetery in Winchester.
