Mr. James A. O'Connell, of Medford, passed away following a long and hard fought battle against Alzheimer's Disease on October 14, 2025, he was 94. Born and raised in Dorchester, he was the cherished son of the late Alice D. (Morse) and James F. O'Connell. James earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from Northeastern University and began a long and distinguished career as a mechanical engineer and draftsman. Beginning at Avery & Saul in Cambridge, then Stone and Webster of Boston and retiring from Badger Engineering of Cambridge. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Married in 1957 at St. Clement Church, he was the beloved husband of Anna M. (Trebino) O'Connell, who passed away in June of this year, together they would have celebrated 68 years of marriage. James enjoyed playing golf in earlier years and following Boston sports, he and Anna loved watching the Red Sox and Bruins games together. Especially devoted to his wife and family, James was the cherished father of the late Joan E. O'Connell and is survived by his sons, James G. O'Connell and his partner Michael Micale of Alpharetta, Georgia and Daniel G. O'Connell of Medford. He was the loving grandfather of James, Julianne, Jaclyn, Jennifer and John and the great-grandfather of three. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, Monday morning, October 27th from 9:30AM to 10:30AM, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated at St. Raphael Church, Medford at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
