Obituary

Herbert "Herbie" Johnson - Of Somerville, formerly of Springfield, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. He was 85 years old.

He was the beloved son of the late Albert J. and Mary (Payne) Johnson. He is also lovingly survived by many dear friends of Walnut Street Center.

Herbert "Herbie" moved to Walnut Street Center in 1981, where he became a cherished member of the community for many years. Herbie had a great love for the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed spending time fishing whenever he could. He was proud to volunteer and participate in the Special Olympics, where he earned awards in both bowling and basketball. Always eager to help others, Herbie also volunteered at Gaining Ground Farm, helping to grow food for the homeless.

Herbie was a proud Boy Scout and enjoyed many activities throughout his life. One of his favorite pastimes was watching WWE SmackDown, and he especially loved attending live wrestling events.

He worked at Project Triangle and Stop & Shop, where he took great pride in his work. For the last eight years, Herbie resided at 25 Bonair, where he was deeply loved and cared for by the staff at Walnut Street Center. The staff who worked with him shared a special bond with Herbie, and he brought joy to many lives.

Herbie was predeceased by his three best friends, Tom, Ron, and Vincent, who meant so much to him throughout his life.

A burial will take place at a future date at Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
