George E.
Hartnett
Jul 20, 1938 — Aug 29, 2026
Somerville
George E Hartnett, lifelong resident of Somerville, passed away on August 29, 2026, in the comfort of his home surrounded by loved ones. At 88, George chose to rest after decades of battling cancer, powering through every treatment option available to him. He was a beloved son of Dennis & Mary Hartnett and joins them in peaceful eternity.
Georgie was a devoted brother to Dennis Hartnett & his late wife Mollie, Rita Crowe & her late husband Jimmy, Judy McNamara & her late husband Paul, his late brother John Hartnett & wife Cecilia, and late sister Mary Hartnett. Though a bachelor, Uncle Georgie was a dedicated family man and will be greatly missed by Doreen, Jimmy, Steven, & Kimberly Crowe, Linda Callinan & her husband Jim, Lisa Starek & her husband John, Paul McNamara & his wife Leyla, the late Denise Stracqualursi & her husband Paul, and the late Cheryl Mullen. The holidays with extended family were always his favorite, he delighted in seeing the grandkids grow up and proudly remarked on just how good they all are.
As a young man, George followed his brother Dennis into the US Army and often reminisced about the shenanigans they got into while enlisted. From there he went to work for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier and, though management was a hassle, he appreciated a job outdoors and encounters with the residents along his route.
In healthier times George enjoyed skiing, biking and traveling. Vacations with Virginia (Ginny) Michaels & friends brought him great joy and he loved spending time with Ginny in NH. When it was time to slow down, George found contentment with life’s simple pleasures, sitting in his garden with a cup of coffee, a cigar, and his “best friend in the whole wide world” Charlie, the family dog.
