Obituary

Dianne Elizabeth (Wearne) Jonas – Of Somerville, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 74 years old.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Dianne was the cherished daughter of the late Ronald and Elaine (Conroy) Wearne. Following her graduation from high school, she continued her education with remarkable dedication, ultimately earning her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Dianne devoted her career to higher education, serving as a professor of Linguistics for many years. She was deeply passionate about teaching and found great fulfillment in mentoring and inspiring her students, many of whom benefited from her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering encouragement.

While Dianne was immensely proud of being a mother, one of the greatest joys of her life was becoming a grandmother. Her granddaughters were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Among their favorite traditions was story time. Dianne had a remarkable gift for bringing books to life, captivating her granddaughters with expressive voices, vivid imagination, and heartfelt enthusiasm. In her hands, every story became an adventure, creating treasured memories that will forever remain in their hearts.

Dianne was also known for her gracious hospitality and love of bringing people together. She delighted in hosting elegant dinner parties, both at home and while traveling abroad, welcoming friends from around the world to gather around her table. Her meals were thoughtfully prepared, but it was the laughter, conversation, and lasting friendships that meant the most to her. She believed that sharing a meal was one of life's greatest gifts and viewed every gathering as an opportunity to create meaningful memories with those she loved.

An avid gardener, Dianne possessed a natural talent for transforming ordinary spaces into beautiful landscapes. She carefully selected flowers, plants, and colors that complemented one another, creating vibrant gardens that reflected her creativity and appreciation for nature. Whether tending to a small flower bed or a larger garden, she found peace and happiness outdoors, and her gardens were admired by all who visited.

Beloved mother of Andrew Jonas and his wife Risa, and Michael Jonas. Devoted grandmother of Elizabeth Jonas and May Jonas. Cherished sister of Peter Wearne. Dear sister in-law Christa Grapentin and Heather Wearne. Loving aunt of Emma Wearne, Heidi Wearne, and Jimmy Wearne. Also lovingly survived by many loving friends and family all over the world.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
