Charles L. McCaughey, of Somerville, passed away at the Life Care Center in Stoneham on August 31, 2023, he was 87. Born and raised in Fort Augustus, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Charlie was one of seven children born to Mary (Garland) and James McCaughey. Growing up on the family farm, Charlie learned the value of working hard to provide for everyone. A talented carpenter by trade, he worked with his brother and best friend, Joseph, under the name McCaughey Construction. Over the years, he worked on many homes in and around the greater Boston area, including his own home on Hancock Street.
Charlie enjoyed summer visits back home to PEI to visit his mother, these working vacations often involved working on the family homestead or tending the farm fields. Following retirement, he enjoyed working around his home and tending to his garden, which was awarded several times by the Somerville Garden club, tinkering on many projects for family and friends, listening to country music, and working on his cars. He was highly respected and loved by his neighbors. Above all he cherished time spent with family.
Charlie was the devoted partner for nearly 50 years to Mary Anne Shea of Somerville. The beloved husband of the late Anna (Chaisson), Loving father of Charlene O'Neill and her partner Timothy Cronin of Haverhill, William McCaughey of Lowell and his late partner Carlos Metcalf and Shelley Jareo and her husband Scott of Dracut. Cherished Papa of Cormac and Ronan O'Neill and Emily Jareo. Dear brother of Carlotta Kelly and her husband Jack, John McCaughey and his late wife Helen and Mary McCaughey and her partner Wayne Burke all of Prince Edward Island, Canada and the late Elizabeth Aylward and her husband William, Joseph McCaughey and his surviving wife Mary Lou of Melrose and Vernon McCaughey and his surviving wife Hildegard of Wilbraham. Also survived by many, many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral Procession from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Wednesday, September 6th at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Catherine of Genoa Church at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Calling Hours Tuesday 4PM-7PM. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles' name can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org. The family is especially grateful to not only the staff, but also the residents of Life Care Center in Stoneham for the love and care shown to Charles by all of them.
